Sea Salt Spray for Men: How to Use It for Texture, Volume, and Hold

Sea salt spray is our best-selling product, and the question we get most often is some version of "how do I actually use this?" It is a simple product that behaves differently depending on your hair type, whether your hair is wet or dry, and what you do after you spray it. This guide covers all of that.

What sea salt spray does

Salt draws moisture out of the hair shaft and roughs up the cuticle slightly. That does two things: it adds grip between individual hairs so they hold a shape, and it removes the slickness that makes fine hair fall flat. The result is the texture and body you get after a day at the beach, which is where the name comes from.

Our SEA SALT Texturizing Spray uses Mediterranean sea salt plus botanical extracts and probiotics. The salt provides the texture. The botanicals and probiotics are there because pure salt water is drying over time, and we wanted a formula you can use every day without the hair feeling like straw. The finish is matte, touchable, and never stiff.

Wet hair vs. dry hair

This is the most important decision, and it changes the result completely.

On damp, towel-dried hair: This is the standard method. Spray 4 to 6 pumps through the hair, roots to ends. Scrunch, rake with your fingers, and either air dry or blow dry. The salt sets as the hair dries, so you get volume and a natural, lived-in shape with light hold. Blow drying while you shape it gives you more lift at the roots.

On dry hair: Spray 2 to 3 pumps, hold the bottle 8 to 10 inches away, and work it through with your fingers. On dry hair the spray adds grit and separation without changing the overall shape much. This is the method for refreshing a style midday or for adding texture to hair that is already styled.

If you want volume, use it damp. If you want texture and separation, use it dry. If you want both, use it damp, dry the hair, and add one pump on top.

How much to use

Start with less than you think. A common mistake is soaking the hair, which weighs it down and leaves residue. For short hair, 3 to 4 pumps. For medium hair, 4 to 6. For long hair, 6 to 8. You can always add more.

By hair type

Fine or thin hair: This is where sea salt spray shines. Fine hair lacks grip and falls flat because the strands are smooth. Salt adds the grip. Apply to damp hair, blow dry with your fingers lifting at the roots, and you will get noticeably more volume. Do not layer a heavy product on top or you will undo the lift.

Thick hair: Use less and apply mostly at the roots and mid-lengths. Thick hair already has body, so you are after texture and control rather than volume. A fiber or forming cream over the top gives you hold.

Curly or wavy hair: Sea salt spray defines waves without the crunch of gel. Apply to soaking-wet hair, scrunch upward, and air dry. Do not touch it while drying.

Short hair (under 2 inches): Apply to damp hair, rub through with your palms, and push into shape. It gives a textured crop a piecey, matte look without product shine.

Layering with other products

Sea salt spray is a pre-styler. It is designed to go on first and have something else go over it when you want more hold.

  • For a textured, matte look with strong hold: Sea salt spray on damp hair, blow dry, then a small amount of Hair Styling Fiber worked through the ends.
  • For a natural, medium-hold look: Sea salt spray, dry, then a pea-sized amount of Forming Cream.
  • For a slick or classic style: Skip the sea salt spray. Salt and high-shine pomade work against each other.
  • For a "no product" look: Sea salt spray alone on damp hair, air dried.

Can you use sea salt spray every day?

Yes, with two caveats. First, use a formula with conditioning ingredients, because pure salt water used daily will dry the hair. Ours includes botanical extracts and probiotics for exactly this reason. Second, wash your hair at least every other day to clear the buildup. Our 4-in-1 CONTROL WASH handles hair, face, and body in one step and rinses salt out completely.

Common mistakes

  • Spraying too close. Hold the bottle 8 to 10 inches away so it mists rather than soaks.
  • Spraying only the top. Lift sections and get the spray to the roots, especially at the crown.
  • Using it on soaking wet hair when you want volume. Towel dry first. Water dilutes the salt.
  • Combing it through. Combing flattens the texture you are trying to create. Use your fingers.
  • Expecting strong hold. Sea salt spray is light hold by design. For hold, layer a fiber or cream over it.

Frequently asked questions

Does sea salt spray damage hair? Pure salt water used daily can dry hair out. A formulated spray with conditioning agents, used on hair that is washed regularly, does not.

Is sea salt spray good for thinning hair? It is one of the best products for it. It adds volume and texture that make hair look fuller without weighing it down. It does not regrow hair.

Can I use sea salt spray on a beard? A light mist on a long beard adds texture and tames flyaways. Follow with beard oil since salt is drying.

Does it smell like the ocean? Ours has a light, clean ocean scent that fades quickly and does not compete with cologne.
